Rediscovering Oman: A Nostalgic Journey to Nizwa Souq

Having called Oman home from 1995 to 2002, my affection for this enchanting country and its warm-hearted people knows no bounds. Although I had visited Nizwa during my school days, the desire to appreciate its beauty as an adult lingered in my heart.

The Road Less Travelled: Muscat to Nizwa

Our day began early as we departed from the hotel, aiming to avoid the crowds of tourists that normally flood popular attractions. Throughout our travels in Oman, we discovered that leaving Muscat by 8 am to 8:30 am was ideal for reaching tourist sites before the rush. This strategic timing consistently placed us ahead of the tourist influx at every destination.

The journey from Muscat to Nizwa unfolds along a well-maintained highway, dotted with convenient petrol stations offering food, beverages and restroom facilities. However, it’s worth noting that these are rural Omani toilets, so carrying your own toilet paper and hand sanitiser is advisable. Respecting local customs, we ensured our attire was modest and respectful.

As we ventured further from the bustling city, the serene landscapes of Oman’s countryside unfolded before us. The drive itself was a spectacle, meandering through rugged mountains (known as Jebels), picturesque villages and scenic Wadis (dry riverbeds). The approximately 1 hour 40-minute journey from Muscat to Nizwa offered glimpses of Oman’s diverse natural beauty and rural charm, though travel time may vary based on hotel location and traffic conditions.

A Tapestry of Traditions: Navigating Nizwa Souq

Arriving in Nizwa, the majestic silhouette of Nizwa Fort welcomed us, serving as a poignant reminder of the city’s deep-rooted history and cultural significance. After parking our car near the fort, we eagerly set out to explore Nizwa Souq.

The Souq proved to be a sensory feast, alive with vibrant colours and enticing aromas. The scent of burning Omani Frankincense wafted through the air, evoking nostalgic memories of my childhood in Oman.

As we wandered through the bustling alleys of the Souq, I reacquainted myself with Omani treasures that had slipped from my memory, from ornate Khanjars and intricately crafted pots to exquisite silver jewellery, traditional rifles and aromatic incense and burners.

Reflection and Gratitude

The experience was deeply nostalgic, transporting me back to the cherished moments of my time in Oman. Nizwa served as a catalyst, reigniting forgotten memories and reigniting my love for this amazing country.
